Status: 21 hours per week, part-year. Schedule: Monday - Friday, 2pm - 6pm with 1 additional hour weekly for team meeting. During PPS scheduled in-service days, full-day camp coverage is required for various shifts between 7:30am - 6pm. Work hours during school breaks (Spring, Fall, Winter, and Summer Camps) are not guaranteed and depend on enrollment and program needs. School Year Program runs August 17th, 2026 – June 11th, 2027.

About Neighborhood House

Neighborhood House is a non-profit agency providing social services for children, families, seniors, and people experiencing food and housing insecurity. We have been engaging in anti-poverty work for 125 years, offering a safety net to ensure that our community has the support they need to thrive. Our School Age Program operates before and after school programs at four North and NE Portland elementary schools.

About the Role

The Assistant Program Leader (APL) helps support teachers in developing and teaching curriculum, as well as supporting students in social and emotional development. This entry-level position provides professional experience working with youth, developing curriculum, and being part of a community-based non-profit. The APL will design and implement age-appropriate curriculum tailored to the interests of themselves and the children. APLs work closely with the Program Leader and Program Coordinator to provide safe, structured learning and socio-emotional development opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Work with children in a 15:1 ratio, assisting with homework, group activities, recess, and serving snacks.
  • Support administrative duties such as making copies, turning in payments, and communicating with parents professionally via email and phone.
  • Collaborate with site staff, attend meetings, and participate in trainings.
  • Attend a minimum of 20 hours of training each licensing year and submit documentation to ORO.
  • Assist with lesson and activity planning, setup, and classroom preparation.
  • Use Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
  • Adhere to licensing regulations, school rules, and program requirements.
  • Maintain regular cleaning and upkeep of classrooms.
  • Act as a positive role model for youth and communicate student concerns to the Program Coordinator promptly.
  • Arrive on time to prepare the classroom and be ready for children’s arrival.

Requirements

  • Dedicated, reliable, and organized with a strong interest in working with children and education.
  • Ability to use MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents.
  • Strong communication skills for responding to sensitive inquiries.
  • Problem-solving and common-sense understanding to carry out instructions.

Qualifications

  • Some experience working in an educational or camp setting preferred.
  • Must currently have or be able to obtain and maintain registration in the Oregon Central Background Registry (CBR).
  • Food Handlers Card and CPR/First Aid Certification (obtain within 30 days of employment—cost covered by the organization).
  • Experience with MS Office applications and technology.

  • Regularly required to talk, hear, sit, stand, and use computer equipment for extended periods.
  • Must be able to use hands to finger, handle, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
