Assistant Professor - Plant Evolutionary Biology
Position Summary
The Department of Biology at Austin Peay State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor-Plant Evolutionary Biology. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position to begin August 2024. We are seeking a colleague whose interests complement and expand existing departmental strengths in ecology, evolution, and organismal biology. The area of specialty is open, but we are especially interested in candidates who will utilize non-model plant species found in the central or eastern US, and who will develop a field component to their research program. We are seeking candidates with experience in mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and a commitment to improving access of under-served populations to graduate and professional programs in biology.

This position will contribute to the academic mission of Austin Peay State University by conducting high-quality research, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, and engaging in service activities within the department and university community.
Responsibilities
- Conduct high-quality research in Plant Evolutionary Biology using non-model plant species found in the central or eastern US, and develop a field component to the research program.
- Mentor students from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from under-served populations, to improve their access to graduate and professional programs in biology.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Plant Evolutionary Biology and related areas.
- Engage in service activities within the department and university community, including committee work, departmental initiatives, and outreach efforts.
Requirements
- A PhD in Plant Evolutionary Biology or a closely related field by the start date of the appointment.
- Research experience in Plant Evolutionary Biology using non-model plant species found in the central or eastern US.
- Experience in mentoring students from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from under-served populations.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and beyond.
Qualifications
- Strong record of scholarly achievement in Plant Evolutionary Biology.
- Proven ability to secure external funding for research projects.
