About the role

The Industrial Technology, Packaging, and Entrepreneurship Area in the Orfalea College of Business at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-line, academic year position as Assistant Professor of Supply Chain Management (SCM) beginning August 17, 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses at the undergraduate and master’s levels in SCM, contributing to and expanding curricular development.
  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students on research and project activities.
  • Engage in scholarly work that is of very high quality as evidenced by external peer review.
  • Perform service activities at all levels of the University.
  • Collaborate with other departments, colleges, and industry partners to contribute to the development and enhancement of laboratory facilities that support both teaching and research.

Requirements

  • Hold a Ph.D. in Supply Chain Management/Operations Management or in Industrial/Manufacturing/Systems Engineering or a closely related field with a strong interest in teaching supply chain management and operations management courses.
  • Knowledge and skills in digital applications are essential, including but not limited to artificial intelligence (AI), data science, machine learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, robotic process automation (RPA), analytics (e.g., sustainability, risk modeling and resilience), optimization and simulation tools, data visualization, enterprise resource planning (ERP) platforms, and technology management.
  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop an applied research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students, and partnerships with key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Supply Chain Management/Operations Management or in Industrial/Manufacturing/Systems Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Strong interest in teaching supply chain management and operations management courses.
  • Knowledge and skills in digital applications.
  • Excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop an applied research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students, and partnerships with key stakeholders.
  • Experience with laboratory-based instruction.
  • Industry experience is preferred.

Skills

  • Knowledge and skills related to process improvement, product development and manufacturing, and packaging systems.
  • Experience with digital applications such as AI, data science, machine learning (ML), IoT, blockchain, RPA, analytics, optimization and simulation tools, data visualization, ERP platforms, and technology management.

Benefits

Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience of the individual selected. Qualified candidates with industry experience are encouraged to apply. Anticipated hiring range for Assistant Professor is $125,300 - $138,500.
