Assistant Professor of Sociology

Faculty position in the Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, tenure-track at the rank of (advanced) assistant professor in demography, sociology of population, and health, beginning August 2027.

About the role

The successful candidate will join the Center for Demography and Ecology, contribute to its multi-disciplinary research and training in population science, and align with the College of Letters & Science’s mission of evidence-based, student-centered teaching and mentoring. This position is part of the Wisconsin Research, Innovation and Scholarly Excellence (RISE) Initiative, which fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across departments, schools, and colleges to address complex societal challenges.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research in demography, sociology of population, and health using demographic and statistical methods, with a track record or strong potential for leading NICHD-funded research.
• Teach and mentor undergraduate students in an inclusive, equity-centered environment.
• Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration with research centers such as the Center for Demography and Ecology, Center for Demography of Health and Aging, and Center for Healthy Minds.
• Contribute to the College of Letters & Science’s commitment to shared governance, excellent teaching, and classroom innovation.
• Participate in RISE community activities, including seminars and colloquia, to share research and identify collaborative opportunities.

Requirements

• PhD in Sociology or a related field, completed prior to the start of the appointment.
• Demonstrated creativity and excellence in teaching and scholarly research.
• Research focus in demography, sociology of population, and health or a related field.
• Evidence of either a history of or potential to successfully pursue and lead NICHD-funded research.
• Demonstrated potential for interdisciplinary collaboration.
• Experience with or ability to foster an inclusive and equity-centered teaching, learning, mentoring, and research environment.
