About the role

The Department of Theatre at Barnard College, Columbia University, seeks a full‑time Assistant Professor of Professional Practice in design—a working theatre designer with expertise in design and the pedagogy of design teaching. The appointment begins July 1, 2027. Applicants are expected to hold the appropriate terminal degree (MFA) in design and possess an exciting portfolio of theatre design work. The position is reviewed and renewable, with expectations for ongoing artistic work for retention and promotion.

Responsibilities

  • Teach four courses per year (lecture/seminar and practicum), including undergraduate advising.
  • Design 1–2 main‑stage productions annually.
  • Co‑advise the annual Thesis Festival.
  • Oversee and mentor the senior thesis in design (2–5 students per year) across four design areas, collaborating with professional directors and design teams.
  • Contribute to departmental service and, eventually, college‑wide service.
  • Maintain an active, nationally visible artistic trajectory throughout the appointment.
  • Engage in sustainable theatre practices where possible.

Qualifications

  • MFA in theatre design (terminal degree); a Ph.D. is a plus for teaching research‑oriented courses.
  • 3–5 years of professional theatre design experience.
  • Demonstrated record of professional productions.
  • Competency in teaching two design areas.
  • Expertise in at least two design disciplines; strong need for scenic design.
  • Interest or expertise in costume, lighting, sound, video/projection, props, or puppetry design.
  • Demonstrated interest and facility with sustainable theatre practices.
