The Department of Political Science at Lehman College, The City University of New York, invites applications for an Assistant Professor in American politics, beginning Fall 2027. We welcome applications from scholars across the field, and are especially interested in candidates whose research and teaching engage one or more of the following areas: public law, including constitutional law, law and courts, law and society, and American constitutional development; immigration law, policy, and politics, including citizenship; criminal justice and civil rights; American political behavior and institutions, including elections, public opinion, parties, and political participation; American political development; and the intersection of technology and politics, including artificial intelligence. A central service responsibility for the position will be pre-law advising. The appointee will serve as the department’s pre-law advisor and will lead the pre-law program, departmental internships, and the minor in Law and Government. Candidates must be able to teach the department’s introductory course on American government and politics. Responsibilities of the academic appointment include maintaining an active program of scholarship and a robust publication record; developing courses and curriculum and teaching introductory and advanced undergraduate courses; and service to the department and full participation in the life of the College and the University. Obtaining grant funding to support research and institutional initiatives is encouraged. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collegially as a team member are also important. The faculty member may have the opportunity to become involved in graduate programs (master’s and PhD level) at the CUNY Graduate Center. The appointment requires regular on-campus presence for teaching, advising, office hours, and departmental and College activities, although some online teaching or remote administrative work may be involved. Qualifications Ph.D. in Political Science or related field or J.S.D./S.J.D., in hand by start date. Preferred: J.D./Ph.D.; experience with or commitment to pre-law advising and mentoring students toward legal and public careers; a robust record of teaching and research. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Compensation $98,231 - $112,841 CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs.
