Assistant Professor of Physics
Oberlin College’s Department of Physics & Astronomy seeks a full-time tenure-track faculty member to join the College of Arts and Sciences in fall 2027. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in experimental condensed matter, materials, or applied physics to support engineering-related initiatives, but will consider other research specialties that enable robust undergraduate research.
About the role
The department graduates approximately 15 majors per year in physics, astrophysics, or materials physics. Current faculty research spans infrared molecular spectroscopy, magnetic nanomaterials, atomic physics, extragalactic chemical evolution, galaxy formation, gravitational-wave simulations, and experimental particle physics. Approximately 80% of students engage in research during the semester, summer, or Oberlin’s month-long Winter Term. The department maintains strong external support, primarily through NSF RUI and MRI programs.
Responsibilities
- Teach 4.5 courses per year across the undergraduate physics curriculum, including introductory and advanced courses for majors, lab courses, and general-audience or seminar courses tied to faculty interests.
- Conduct sustained scholarly research and/or creative work appropriate to the position.
- Advise students and mentor undergraduate research.
- Participate in faculty governance, including committee service.
