Assistant Professor of Film and Media Industry Studies

About the Role

The Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Film and Media Industry Studies to begin July 1, 2027. We welcome applications from scholars conducting historical and/or contemporary research and specializing in film, television, streaming, video games, social media, and/or other media industries. We conceive industry studies broadly to include production studies, policy studies, political economy, labor studies, and infrastructure studies.

Candidates who study any geographic region are welcome to apply, and we especially welcome candidates who explore inter/transnational media industries or media industries of the Global South. Applicants must demonstrate potential for excellence in scholarship, as well as in teaching a range of core and elective courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, graduate mentoring, and university service.

Responsibilities

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Film and Media Studies or related field, completed by June 30, 2027
• Demonstrated potential for excellence in scholarship
• Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring

Qualifications

Candidates should discuss any work related to inclusive excellence in their written materials. A reflective teaching statement should indicate:

• Teaching experiences to date, including experience with teaching undergraduates and graduate students
• Mentorship provided in research or outreach activities
• Teaching approaches and philosophies, including strategies for effective teaching

Pay

The salary range for this position is $93,500 - $121,400. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. Off-scale salaries and other components of pay may be offered to meet competitive conditions.
