Assistant Professor of English, Technical and Professional Writing

Marist University’s English Department invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English in Technical and Professional Writing, beginning Fall 2027. A willingness to work with undergraduate majors, minors, and non-majors from across campus is central to this position.

About the Role

We encourage applications from candidates with one or more of these specializations: Health/Medical Rhetorics, Disability Rhetorics, Cultural Rhetorics, Social Justice, and/or Writing in the Professions. The successful candidate will teach introductory writing courses such as Writing for College and Intro to Professional Writing, as well as advanced undergraduate courses in their areas of specialization. The position requires the ability and willingness to teach classes across the discipline, mentor student projects and organizations, and collaborate with campus partners while supporting and expanding the Professional Writing minor and offerings.

Responsibilities

• Teach a 3-4 course load per semester; faculty who achieve and maintain an outstanding record of scholarship may be eligible for a reduced 3-3 teaching load.
• Participate regularly in service activities for students, the university, and the community.
• Engage in ongoing research and scholarship.

Requirements

• PhD in Rhetoric & Composition, English, or a related field must be in hand before the start date of the appointment.
• Teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD already conferred at the time of application.

Pay

$75,000 - $80,000 per year.

Schedule

• 9 months per year.
• Work schedule varies and includes time for teaching, office hours, departmental/school activities, and other responsibilities as needed.
• Flexible work schedule; course schedule varies each semester.

About the Department

The English Department includes 18 faculty members and offers a BA in English with concentrations in Writing, Literature, and Theatre, as well as minors in Professional Writing, Creative Writing, Literature, and Theatre. The department contributes substantially to the First Year Seminar program and interdisciplinary programs including Africana Studies, American Studies, Global Studies, Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Asian Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The English Department is housed in the School of Liberal Arts, which also includes departments in Political Science, History, World Languages & Cultures, and Philosophy & Religious Studies.
