Assistant Professor of English, Early Modern Literature

Marist University’s English Department invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English in Early Modern Literature beginning Fall 2027.

About the Role

A willingness to work with undergraduate majors, minors, and non-majors from across campus is central to this position. We encourage applications from candidates whose work intersects with interdisciplinary programs on campus, such as Africana Studies, Global Studies, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. We also encourage candidates working across different languages and national contexts to apply.

Candidates should have an ability and willingness to teach introductory general-education literature courses, as well as advanced undergraduate courses in their areas of specialization, to mentor student projects and organizations, and to collaborate with campus partners.

Responsibilities

• Teach 3–4 courses per semester; faculty who achieve and maintain an outstanding record of scholarship may be eligible for a 3–3 teaching load.
• Participate regularly in service activities for students, the University, and the community.

Requirements

• PhD in English, Comparative Literature, or a related field in hand before the start date of the appointment.
• Teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level.

• Tuition Benefits:
  • Up to 16 undergraduate credits per semester for employee, spouse, and dependent children under age 26.
  • Up to 18 graduate credits per academic calendar.
  • University pays 100% tuition only.
  • Eligible dependents may be reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.

Pay

$75,000 – $80,000 per year.

Schedule

• 9-month academic year.
• Work schedule varies as required for teaching, office hours, departmental/school activities, and other duties; flexible hours with course schedule changing each semester.

About the Department

The English Department includes 18 faculty members and offers a BA in English with concentrations in Writing, Literature, and Theatre, plus minors in Professional Writing, Creative Writing, Literature, and Theatre. The department contributes substantially to the First-Year Seminar program and interdisciplinary programs including Africana Studies, American Studies, Global Studies, Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Asian Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The department is housed in the School of Liberal Arts, which also includes Political Science, History, World Languages & Cultures, and Philosophy & Religious Studies.
