Assistant Professor of Counseling

About the role

The successful candidate will join a premier counselor education program in Southern California serving a culturally diverse student body. Responsibilities include teaching core CACREP courses in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialty, with opportunities to teach in the Ánimo Latinx Health Counseling Concentration (which focuses on bilingual/bicultural counseling, Latinx cultures, therapeutic Spanish, appropriate interventions, and social justice advocacy). The role also requires conducting research that leads to peer‑reviewed publications, contributing to department life, advising students, serving on committees, and participating in broader university and disciplinary communities. Candidates must demonstrate a firm commitment to multicultural perspectives through an intersectional lens and a professional track record reflecting that commitment, while working effectively and collegially with intersecting marginalized social groups.

Required Qualifications

• Doctorate in counselor education, counseling psychology, or related field by the appointment date.
• Demonstrated professional identity as, and commitment to, a counselor educator as defined by CACREP, with clear affiliations to relevant counseling associations (e.g., membership in ACA/ACES).
• Broad knowledge of the clinical mental health counseling curriculum.
• Licensed or license‑eligible as a professional counselor or equivalent (LPC, LPCC, LMCHC, etc.) in the current state or license‑eligible in California.
• Evidence of the ability to conduct research (including dissertation research).
• University‑level teaching experience (including co‑teaching and/or guest lecturing).
• Demonstrated potential for effective integration of technology into instruction.
• Demonstrated awareness/knowledge of racial inequities and challenges faced by historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged groups.
• Demonstrated commitment and contributions to social justice advocacy through teaching/mentoring graduate students, research agenda and publications, and/or service activities.
• Ability to work effectively and collegially with students, staff, faculty, and community members from intersecting marginalized social groups.

Preferred Qualifications

• In‑depth knowledge of social justice issues such as critical race theory, liberation psychology, intersectionality, Black feminist or womanist theories, and/or dismantling anti‑Black racism.
• Knowledge of Latinx cultures and social justice issues relevant to the Latinx community (e.g., immigration/acculturation, identity, colorism, intersectionality, etc.).
• Bilingual fluency in spoken Spanish.
• Proficient in reading and writing Spanish.
• Graduate from a CACREP‑accredited program.
• Experience with CACREP accreditation.

Pay

The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $6,221 to $13,224 monthly (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $6,800 to $6,937 per month. Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
