Washington and Lee University invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Business Administration – Strategy in the Williams School of Commerce, Economics & Politics. The appointment will begin July 1, 2027.

About the Role

Faculty in this position will teach and develop courses in organizational-level strategy that support the Business Administration major. We seek candidates whose teaching and scholarship examine how organizations create, adapt, and sustain value in dynamic business environments. A successful candidate will help students understand how firms formulate, evaluate, and implement strategy while responding to technological change, evolving competitive conditions, organizational complexity, stakeholder expectations, and increasing uncertainty.

We seek candidates excited by the opportunity to shape this area of the curriculum by developing innovative courses that complement existing departmental strengths while expanding opportunities for students. Areas of particular interest include corporate strategy, technology strategy, mergers and acquisitions, strategic leadership, corporate governance, strategy implementation, strategic decision-making under uncertainty, and related areas of organizational-level strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and develop courses in organizational-level strategy within an undergraduate liberal arts setting.
  • Integrate course content with other disciplines and employ diverse pedagogical techniques, including experiential learning.
  • Publish scholarly research in business and related fields.
  • Contribute to service within the W&L community.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field (ABD candidates must present evidence that their dissertation will be defended by July 1, 2027).
  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness in strategy.
  • Some prior teaching experience.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching within a liberal arts environment.
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary studies and experiential learning.

Schedule

The school calendar consists of two 13-week terms (fall and winter) and a unique 4-week spring term. The regular teaching load is five courses per year, with a 2-2 load in the first year for new hires.

Pay

The expected salary for this position is between $175,000 - $185,000, based on factors such as relevant education, experience, tenure status, internal equity, and market considerations.
