Assistant Professor of Advanced Materials

About the Role

The Rice Advanced Materials Institute (RAMI) at Rice University, located in Houston, TX, seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in advanced computational and/or applied artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML)-informed materials research. The anticipated start date is between July 1, 2027, and January 1, 2028. This position is a collaboration between the School of Engineering and Computing and the School of Natural Sciences, with the specific department to be determined based on the candidate's expertise and input.

Responsibilities

• Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses within the candidate's expertise and home department.
• Perform high-quality research in the specialized area and present findings in peer-reviewed publications and conferences.
• Establish a strong research program supported by extramural funding.
• Engage in service to the university and broader scientific community.
• Collaborate with faculty in diverse disciplines.
• Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in a field closely related to materials science, conferred by July 1, 2027.
• Demonstrated excellence in scholarship, teaching, and collegial service.

Research Interests

We seek candidates with research interests in theoretical, computational, modeling, and/or simulation of materials science and related fields, with a focus on applying advanced AI and ML approaches. Research areas may include:

• Next-generation electronics/photonics: Developing materials for low-power/voltage microelectronics, memory/logic, communications, and sensors.
• Energy materials (systems): Innovating materials for energy storage, conversion, and harvesting.
• Materials for the environment: Developing materials for responsible resource use and environmental stewardship.
