About the role

The Department of Justice Studies at San José State University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Law and Technology to join our dynamic and interdisciplinary team starting in August 2027.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of a curriculum that critically examines law, technology, and inequality, including issues such as algorithmic bias, digital evidence, and disparities in access to legal resources.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in our department, including but not limited to courses on law and society, cybersecurity, digital forensics, and forensic science.
  • Conduct research, publish scholarship, and seek external funding to support scholarly research.
  • Engage in service at the department, college, and university levels, including committee work and community outreach.
  • Participate in shared governance, including department, college, and university committees.

Requirements

  • A PhD in legal studies, criminology, justice studies, cyber security, digital forensics, or a related social science field by August 2027.
  • Strong evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, excellence in research.
  • Strong evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, excellence in teaching.
  • An awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population.
  • Potential for delivering Forensic Science-Digital Evidence curriculum.
  • Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals or academic press books.
  • Experience writing grant proposals.
  • Experience teaching at undergraduate or graduate levels.

Qualifications

  • Substantive specialization area in one or more of the following areas: law & society, Black/Latinx experience and/or equity gaps, cybersecurity/digital forensics.
  • Experience with teaching at undergraduate or graduate levels.
  • Ability to contribute to the mission of the department in research, teaching, and service.

Skills

  • Ability to teach in an inclusive and equitable manner.
  • Experience with online teaching platforms like Canvas.

Pay

Commensurate with qualifications, experience, and rank as established by the CSU Salary Schedule. Anticipated hiring academic year annual salary range: $88,000 - $92,000.

Schedule

Full-time, on-site (work in-person at business location).
