About the role

The Department of Music in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Minnesota Duluth invites applications for a non-tenure earning, nine-month 100% appointment as Assistant Professor/Instructor of Low Brass, beginning August 24, 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Teach applied lessons in the low brass area on trombone, euphonium, and tuba.
  • Teach courses in the music area curriculum, which may include jazz ensemble, brass techniques, chamber music, and music liberal education offerings.
  • Actively recruit and retain students for the Department of Music.
  • Engage in outreach activities to promote the Department of Music within the university and the broader community.
  • Participate in department, college, and university service, including faculty meetings, committees, academic advising, and events that contribute to the growth and success of the Department of Music.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree (for Instructor, Job Code 9404) or terminal degree (for Teaching Assistant Professor, Job Code 9403T).
  • Record of musical performance on low brass instruments and successful teaching of trombone, euphonium, and tuba.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years of successful experience teaching trombone, euphonium, and tuba, as well as performance-related classes at the collegiate level.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and maintain a low brass studio.
  • Excellence in teaching other discipline-related courses.

About the Department

The University of Minnesota Duluth is a comprehensive university consistently ranked among the top Midwestern regional universities. The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences includes ten departments, the Tweed Museum of Art, the Fine Arts Academy, the Marshall Performing Arts Center, and Weber Music Hall. Pay

  • Instructor (Job Code 9404): $44,144 – $49,144 per year.
  • Teaching Assistant Professor (Job Code 9403T): $48,000 – $55,000 per year.

Salary is based on education, qualifications, and experience.
