About the role

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for three tenure-track Assistant Professor positions beginning Fall 2026 on the Brownsville campus:

  • One position in Mathematics
  • Two positions in Statistics

Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Develop and maintain a productive, independent research program with potential for external funding.
  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Contribute to the growth and development of academic programs, including the Ph.D. program in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications.
  • Engage in mentorship, collaboration, and service aligned with UTRGV’s mission.

Requirements

  • Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field from an accredited institution (earned by the start date of appointment).
  • Required Qualifications: Demonstrated potential for independent research and scholarly productivity in Mathematics or Statistics; demonstrated potential for effective teaching and mentoring at undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Postdoctoral research experience demonstrating continued scholarly development; evidence of an active and productive research program or potential for high-quality journal publications; demonstrated ability to secure extramural research funding; experience in technology-enhanced, innovative, or evidence-based teaching practices.

Additional Information

  • Work performed primarily in general office environment.
  • Security-sensitive role under Texas Education Code 51.215.
  • Eligible for Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) or Optional Retirement Program (ORP) depending on appointment.
  • Language Proficiency Requirement: Candidates whose primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency via: Paper-based TOEFL - 500; Computer-based TOEFL - 173; Internet-based TOEFL - 61; IELTS - 6.0.
