Assistant Professor in Structural Geology and Geomechanics at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability
About the role
The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPSS) at Stanford University and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in structural geology and geomechanics. EPSS seeks candidates whose research addresses how rocks deform, fracture, flow, and interact with fluids in the upper crust, using field observation as a foundation and quantitative methods, including experimental, numerical, or analytical approaches.
Responsibilities
- Teach courses in structural geology, tectonics, or related areas at undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Advise students.
- Participate actively in the department and school communities.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Earth Science, Geology, Geophysics, or a closely related field. A strong record of research in structural geology, geomechanics, and tectonics is required. Experience in field observation, experimental, numerical, or analytical methods is preferred.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to conduct independent research, mentor students, and contribute to the academic community. They should also have excellent communication skills and the ability to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Skills
Strong skills in quantitative methods, including experimental, numerical, or analytical approaches, are essential. Experience in interdisciplinary research, particularly in the intersection of structural geology and geomechanics, is highly valued.
Benefits
The department offers a competitive salary range of $143,500 - $180,000, commensurate with experience. Additional benefits include health insurance, retirement plans, and professional development opportunities.

The base pay range for this position is $143,500 - $180,000.
Schedule
The position is full-time and requires a minimum of 9 months of service per year.
