About the role

Augusta University's Department of Communication of the Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is seeking to fill a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Communication specializing in Media Production, beginning in August 2027. The candidate should have a terminal degree in the appropriate discipline (communication, journalism, mass communication, media studies, or a closely related field), or its equivalent in training, ability, or experience. Professional experience in broadcast journalism, multimedia, and/or television production is also required. Demonstrated teaching excellence at the college level is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Create, update, and submit course syllabi/outlines to the department and university platforms, as required by university and system policies
  • Maintain a robust record of research
  • Serve on department and college committees
  • Promote student success by engaging in activities that enhance student learning and position learners to be successful in achieving their short- term and long-term academic, career, and personal growth goals
  • Participate in shared governance of department, college, and university as assigned and work well with both colleagues and students

Requirements

  • A PhD in communication, journalism, mass communication, media studies, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated success teaching varied student populations
  • Evidence or promise of an emerging research agenda

Qualifications

  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements)
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations

Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is academic year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in offer letter and yearly contract. The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0. Assistant Professor - Salary and compensation are commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. Advancement through the faculty ranks at Augusta University is only through the annual Promotion and Tenure process in which faculty may apply if eligible (typically five-year increments).

The Department of Communication and Integrated Studies at Augusta University offers BA degrees in Communication and Integrated Studies and certificates in Media Production, Public Relations, and Sports Communication, as well as a minor in Communication. Our BA in Communication prepares students for today's rapidly changing workplace and emphasizes transferable skills that employers demand in dynamic, creative, and team-oriented environments. In preparation for their career endeavors, our majors develop high professional and ethical standards while coming to appreciate both the innovative nature of modern communication and the importance of enduring democratic values in a free and open society. Our integrated curriculum produces graduates with a broad knowledge of communication, including the fundamental skills of the professions and an understanding of the theoretical, legal, and ethical dimensions of communication. The department's areas include communication studies, journalism, public relations, and audio and video production. The department has a student newspaper and magazine, a student television newscast, student-produced podcasts, a scholarly journal, and several student organizations, including the Media Club and the Society of Professional Journalists. The department is housed in the Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, which operates a video production lab.
