Assistant Professor in Criminology

About the role

The Department of Sociology at Virginia Tech in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2027. We are seeking a candidate with a research program in criminology, broadly defined. Applicants from all areas of specialization are welcome, though we have particular interest in scholars whose work advances the sociological understanding of drugs, violence, and/or the use of technology in crime or surveillance. Teaching responsibilities will include a range of criminology courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The standard teaching load is two courses per semester.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in sociology or criminology by the time of appointment
• Record of scholarly productivity
• Potential for excellence in research
• Potential for high-quality teaching in a collegiate environment
• Proven grant potential is preferred

Preferred qualifications

• Research focus on drugs, violence, and/or the use of technology in crime or surveillance
• Willingness and ability to contribute to the growth and development of the Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention and the Cybercriminology Lab
• Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration with units such as the School of Public and International Affairs, Center for Public Administration and Policy, Electrical and Computing Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, and Science and Technology Studies
