Assistant Professor, Health Psychology

Montclair State University’s Department of Psychology invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Health Psychology beginning August 2027. This role offers the opportunity to shape a coordinated departmental initiative expanding Health Psychology across undergraduate, graduate, and online programs within one of the region’s largest psychology departments.

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction, maintain an active research program, publish in high-quality scholarly journals, pursue external funding, mentor student researchers, and support the department’s growing national reputation for research excellence. Responsibilities

• Teach 12 teaching credit hours (TCH) per semester, with potential reassigned time for additional responsibilities (e.g., mentoring doctoral students or program administration).
• Center student success through clear course design, inclusive pedagogies, and integration of emerging disciplinary and pedagogical developments.
• Mentor and advise students at all levels.
• Develop and update courses and curricula aligned with student demands and institutional strategic priorities.
• Maintain a productive research program, publishing in significant national and/or international scholarly venues.
• Pursue external funding opportunities and mentor student researchers.
• Contribute to the university’s mission through service to the department, college, university, and professional communities.
• Participate in shared governance and academic program vitality.

Qualifications

• Earned PhD in Psychology (required).
• Record of achievement and potential for future success in research, scholarship, or creative activity.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching all students.
• Commitment to service.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in health psychology or a closely related subfield.
• Expertise in contemporary health and well-being challenges, such as behavioral health, chronic disease management, health equity, prevention science, aging, stress and resilience, digital health, or social determinants of health.
• Ability to complement existing department strengths in clinical psychology and industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology.
• Significant record of scholarly or creative work.

About the Department

The Department of Psychology is organized into three broad categories: clinical, industrial/organizational (I/O), and psychological science. It serves a large and diverse student body and includes 35 full-time faculty, several emeriti, and support staff. The department boasts 20 active research labs, over $3.5 million in extramural funding, and PhD programs in clinical and I/O psychology, alongside popular MA and certification programs. Faculty research interests span neuroscience, cognitive processes, psychological disorders, forensic psychology, organizational behavior, social attitudes, and diversity science.

Pay
