Assistant Professor, English

About the Role

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies (ELWS) department, with an appointment beginning August 1, 2027. The search focuses on two areas:

• Developmental reading and writing, including integrated reading and writing and studio classes.
• Technical and Professional Writing, including work on a new emphasis within SLCC’s humanities degree.

All English faculty teach first-year writing and may teach classes such as literature and creative writing, depending on enrollment. The department seeks colleagues who value and understand open-access students and teaching, with demonstrated experience in multiple modalities, including in-person, online, and hybrid.

SLCC’s ELWS department includes 30 full-time faculty with expertise in writing studies, integrated reading and writing, creative writing, literature, technical and professional writing, linguistics, and cultural studies. The department offers an associate degree in Humanities with emphases in writing studies, creative writing, literature, and technical and professional writing. SLCC serves over 50,000 students across ten campuses, including an eLearning virtual campus, and supports a diverse student body, including English language learners, first-generation, and refugee students.

Faculty and programs have received numerous awards, including the CCCC Exemplary Teaching Award, CCCC Writing Program Certificate of Excellence, and others.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties

• Provide high-quality, student-centered instruction and assessment to support student learning, success, transfer, and career readiness.
• Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development, course and program assessment, and continuous improvement of departmental programs.
• Contribute to a positive academic community through collegial collaboration, shared governance, and active participation in departmental, school, and college initiatives.
• Support students by maintaining professional communication, addressing concerns, and fostering an inclusive, respectful learning environment.
• Participate in faculty responsibilities, including annual evaluations, required meetings, and campus engagement.
• Engage in professional service and institutional work to advance student success, program quality, and the college’s mission.
• Adhere to college policies, professional standards, and legal requirements, including Academic Freedom, FERPA, and state/federal guidelines.

Teaching Expectations

• Create engaging, inclusive, and student-centered learning environments across face-to-face, online, and hybrid modalities.
• Teach composition, literature, creative writing, linguistics, technical and professional writing, and related courses aligned with departmental curricula.
• Employ evidence-based teaching practices, active learning strategies, and timely feedback to promote student learning.
• Maintain clear communication with students via the learning management system, including grades, expectations, and responses to inquiries.
• Support student achievement through accessible consultation hours, formative assessment, and responsiveness to diverse needs.
• Engage in ongoing improvement of teaching, course design, and instructional practices through assessment and professional development.
• Foster a respectful, inclusive, and safe learning environment that upholds college values and student conduct expectations.

• Participate in disciplinary and professional activities that advance the field and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
• Collaborate in professional learning communities, mentoring relationships, and departmental initiatives to support faculty development.
• Pursue ongoing professional development in teaching, assessment, literacy, language, and student support practices.

Service to the College

• Contribute to the department, school, and college through shared governance, committee work, and institutional projects.
• Collaborate on curriculum review, program development, strategic planning, and continuous improvement efforts.
• Support student success through academic advising, mentoring, recruitment, retention initiatives, and other activities.
• Foster a culture of professional learning by mentoring faculty, participating in peer observation, and contributing to a collaborative community.
• Engage in disciplinary, professional, and community service consistent with organizations like TYCA, NCTE, CCCC, and MLA.
• Provide stewardship of departmental and institutional resources, including budgeting, program planning, and assessment.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups, including students, faculty, and staff from varied backgrounds.
• Experience working with community college students, including those with disabilities and from diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in English, Creative Writing, Writing Studies, Technical and Professional Writing, TESOL, Linguistics, or a closely related field, conferred by the start date.
• Two years of full-time teaching experience in higher education (or equivalent part-time/adjunct/graduate teaching experience).

Preferred Qualifications

• Earned doctorate in Writing Studies, Composition and Rhetoric, Technical or Professional Writing, or Developmental Education.
• Demonstrated success working with students from diverse backgrounds and literacy practices.
• Teaching experience or relevant graduate coursework in postsecondary reading, developmental writing, integrated reading and writing, corequisite support, or studio teaching.
• Teaching experience or relevant graduate coursework in technical and professional writing.
• Record of participation in teaching-focused professional development activities.
• Experience designing and teaching courses in multiple modalities, including community-engaged learning.

Pay

Base salary is for a 9-month academic year appointment, paid over 12 months. Additional compensation may be available for overload teaching. Summer semester compensation is 23.5% of base for a full teaching load. Salary placement is based on credentials, experience, teaching effectiveness, competencies, and internal equity.
