Position Summary

The Department of Biology at Austin Peay State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor-Aquatic Biologist. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position to begin August 2024. We seek a colleague whose research interests complement and expand the Department’s existing strengths in ecology, evolution, and organismal biology and whose research focuses on freshwater macroinvertebrate communities.

About the role

This position will contribute to the academic mission of the Department of Biology at Austin Peay State University. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in high-quality research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and provide service to the university and professional organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct original research in aquatic biology, focusing on freshwater macroinvertebrate communities.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in aquatic biology, ecology, and related fields.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university committees and initiatives.
  • Secure external funding for research projects.
  • Engage in professional development activities and maintain a strong publication record.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Biology, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, or a closely related field by the start date.
  • Strong record of research productivity, including peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in aquatic biology and related fields.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to secure external funding for research projects.

Qualifications

  • Research focus on freshwater macroinvertebrate communities.
  • Experience working with aquatic organisms and conducting field and laboratory research.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary collaborations within the Department of Biology.

Skills

  • Strong research skills, including experimental design, data analysis, and publication.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to mentor students and supervise research assistants.
  • Experience with grant writing and securing external funding.
