About the role

The Department of Counseling Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position. We seek a candidate to contribute to the department’s expertise in counseling psychology research addressing pressing societal concerns.

Preferred research areas include:

• Research methods in counseling psychology
• Counseling psychology professional issues
• Psychotherapy process and outcome research
• Psychology of work and the future of work

Candidates with methodological expertise in novel quantitative methods are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will contribute to instruction and supervision in our PhD program in counseling psychology, M.S. program in counseling, and undergraduate instruction related to the cross-departmental major in Health Promotion and Health Equity.

Candidates are expected to:

• Contribute to training emphasizing scientist-practitioner perspectives
• Demonstrate competence in serving individuals currently underserved for mental health and wellness across treatment settings
• Uphold APA and ACA professional and ethical standards
• Show evidence of scholarly productivity commensurate with rank, including likelihood of external funding
• Demonstrate strong competence in classroom instruction, counseling, and clinical supervision

Preferred candidates will demonstrate service in the field with a specific focus in Counseling Psychology and/or components specific to the profession. Candidates who are licensed or license-eligible as a psychologist in Wisconsin are encouraged to apply.

About the department

The Department of Counseling Psychology offers:

• MPCAC-accredited master's degree (M.S.) in counseling
• APA-accredited doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in counseling psychology
• A collaborative, cross-departmental undergraduate major in Health Promotion and Health Equity (along with Rehabilitation Psychology and Kinesiology)

The department’s master's and doctoral programs provide an integrated didactic and experiential curriculum for preparing health service psychologists and mental health counselors. The doctoral program follows the APA's scientist-practitioner model, emphasizing counseling and psychological theory, practice, and research skills. The master's program is MPCAC-accredited, focusing on service delivery, individual and group counseling, consultation, research, ethics, multiculturalism, and career counseling.

The department’s mission is to foster growth, healing, and inclusion in teaching, research, and practice. Current faculty expertise includes:

• Psychotherapy processes and outcomes
• Educational and vocational development
• Community-engaged practices and systems-level healthcare interventions
• Child development and parent-child interactions
• Mindfulness and meditation-based interventions
• Health psychology

The Counseling Psychology Training Clinic (CPTC) offers no-fee and sliding-scale psychological services to UW-Madison students and Dane County residents, including individual, family, and group therapy. The clinic also provides direct mental health support and outreach to UW-Madison students through a partnership with University Health Services.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research addressing pressing societal concerns in counseling psychology
• Teach and advise graduate and undergraduate students

Requirements

• PhD in Counseling Psychology (must be conferred by start date)
• Evidence of established research and scholarship
• Demonstrated likelihood of success in securing external funding
• Strong competence in classroom instruction, clinical supervision, and mental health interventions
