Assistant Professor, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Physics
MIT’s Department of Physics and the Schwarzman College of Computing (SCC) seek a tenure-track Assistant Professor whose research bridges Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Physics. The position begins July 1, 2026 or as soon thereafter as possible.
About the role
The successful candidate will hold a shared appointment in both the Department of Physics and the SCC—either in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) or the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS), depending on best fit—and will be a member of the NSF Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions (IAIFI).
Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Physics and in SCC educational programs (standard load: two subjects per year)
- Advise students at all levels
- Conduct original scholarly research at the intersection of AI and Physics
- Supervise students’ participation in research
Requirements
- PhD in Physics or another relevant field by the start of employment
- Research focus on any aspect of AI and Physics, including:
- Using Physics principles and methodologies to understand and develop AI models and algorithms
- Using AI to help solve problems in Physics
- Demonstrated potential to strengthen connections between AI, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, and/or Statistics
Pay
The pay range for a 9-month academic appointment at the entry-level Assistant Professor rank (excluding summer salary) is $140,000–$156,000. The final offer will be based on factors such as scope of the position, the candidate’s work experience and education/training, internal peer equity, and applicable legal requirements.
