Assistant Principal - Secondary
About the Role
Assist in the overall administration of an assigned secondary school within the District. This position supervises professional, paraprofessional, administrative, and support personnel and assists with planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and operations essential to creating a responsive, effective, and efficient instructional environment that maximizes student vocational growth and development.
The role involves developing and implementing programs within organizational policies, reporting major activities to executive-level administrators, and assuming the responsibilities of the Principal in their absence.
Responsibilities
- Supervise assigned professional, paraprofessional, administrative, and support staff, including staffing standards, hiring, assigning work, evaluating performance, counseling, disciplining, and terminating or recommending termination.
- Develop and implement staff training and development programs.
- Assist in planning and implementing school-wide programs, policies, goals, and objectives while ensuring adherence to organizational standards and legal regulations.
- Ensure effective explanation and implementation of all school and District policies.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining plans, school calendars, and schedules to accomplish school goals.
- Assist in developing long-range facility needs, coordinating safety and facility/grounds inspections.
- Assist with preparing and managing the school budget, securing grants, and procuring equipment and supplies.
- Review and evaluate the instructional program, observe classrooms, and make recommendations for improvement in instruction and class management.
- Coordinate and implement required standardized testing programs.
- Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary, complying with due process and student rights.
- Provide leadership and supervision for extracurricular activities.
- Coordinate special programs and events.
- Respond to inquiries, concerns, and complaints from teachers, students, and parents; resolve administrative, instructional, and behavioral problems.
- Prepare and maintain records and reports required by law, Board policies, and administrative directives; ensure staff compliance.
- Assist in implementing the public relations program for the assigned school.
- Enforce policies and procedures to protect the safety and welfare of students and staff on campus.
- Stay abreast of developments and innovations in the profession and ensure staff remain current.
- Keep supervisors informed of routine and unusual events.
- Perform administrative duties such as preparing reports, compiling data, and managing correspondence.
- Represent the school and District at professional and community meetings.
- Coordinate school programs and activities with other schools, agencies, and organizations.
- Attend training, conferences, workshops, and meetings to maintain job knowledge and skills or required certifications.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, supervision, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- State certification in Administration/Supervision at the elementary and/or secondary level, Educational Leadership, or an equivalent certification as defined by the Tennessee Department of Education.
- 3 to 5 years of successful teaching experience with demonstrated leadership experience.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (e.g., Adult Higher Education, MBA, Organizational Management, Public Administration) may be considered.
Degree Equivalency Formula: Bachelor’s Degree = 4 years plus required experience; Master’s Degree = 2 years plus required experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
