About the role
The Assistant Principal of Student Culture Department/Campus is responsible for providing cultural and administrative leadership to address student safety and well-being, social-emotional learning, school discipline, and overall school effectiveness.
Responsibilities
- Understands and supports the mission, vision, and values of DOVE Schools.
- Investigates and resolves all discipline problems in a fair and just manner.
- Interviews students and witnesses in disciplinary investigations.
- Maintains disciplinary records required by policy, regulation, law, or good practice.
- Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws.
- Serves on discipline or expulsion panels as assigned.
- Works with the Principal to establish a safe and secure learning environment for students.
- Develops plans for emergency situations in collaboration with other administrators, staff, and public safety agencies.
- Directs the work of yard duty staff and crossing guards.
- Plans and debriefs emergency drills.
- Updates the school safety plan.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of district, county, state, and federal records and reports.
- Participates in administrative meetings and training to improve administrative skills.
- Maintains current knowledge of the district’s adopted curriculum.
- Provides and maintains appropriate communication with family and community, including law enforcement agencies and the judicial systems.
- Serves as liaison between school and home.
- Serves as liaison between the school and juvenile court.
- Represents the school system at community meetings and conferences.
- Participates in the creation and implementation of the campus's emergency evacuation and preparedness plan.
- Mentors and counsels at-risk students and students in need of additional staff support.
- Develops guidelines for proper student conduct and implement disciplinary procedures and policies that ensure a safe and orderly environment at the assigned school.
- Establishes clear expectations, systems, and routines for behaviors, including social and emotional supports.
- Led strategies to proactively provide and coordinate student support services.
- Supervises teacher classroom management.
- Trains staff on student code of conduct and implementation of discipline.
- Develops and implements teacher orientations.
- Maintains records of disciplinary actions taken to ensure that the student code of conduct is administered properly.
- Communicates with parents and key stakeholders regarding student discipline and safety.
- Maintains a safe and orderly school environment.
- Makes active safety checks of the school grounds.
- Maintains student attendance and truancy, recruitment, enrollment, and retention activities.
- Aids in recruiting, selecting, and retaining highly effective teachers and staff.
- Establishes and implements a plan for Well-being learning across the school aligned with DOVE priorities.
- Leads Character School application and designation process at the state and national level.
- Uses appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parental involvement.
- Attends meetings, conferences, and workshops.
- Models personal commitment to developing self and others.
- Displays the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, and school personnel.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum 5 years of teaching experience in a PK-12 setting (Dove Experience preferred).
- Elementary Experience (preferred).
- Master’s Degree (preferred).
Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of classroom management, school culture, social-emotional learning programs, district policies, and procedures.
- Ability to receive, internalize, and implement feedback from multiple sources.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internal and external to the district.
- Ability to use computer including software, the database used by the district, spreadsheet and word processing software, calculator, copy machine, and telephone.
- Ability to analyze data and generate reports.
- Ability to use effective interview techniques, effective public speaking skills, and problem-solving skills.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Light Work: may require occasional light lifting. Nights and weekend activities will be occasionally required. Position is in the office setting and may involve prolonged work at a desk in one location. Moderate travel is required.
