Job Description

The Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences is creating an environment that affirms community across all dimensions. The successful candidate will develop active, successful, nationally recognized research and teaching programs in remote sensing technologies and techniques to detect, describe, predict threats impacting our agricultural and natural systems and evaluate mitigation strategies.

The successful candidate will develop theoretical/foundational algorithms in remote sensing and/or sensor development (hardware) utilizing a variety of sensors such as fluorescence, hyperspectral and multispectral optical sensing, LiDAR, and/or Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).

  • Applications may include but not limited to satellite-based spatio-temporal remote sensing in soil and plant nutrients/organic matter, ecosystem health (such as agriculture, rangelands, and forests), natural hazards, land use/cover changes (e.g. soil degradation); and/or water quality for health and societal well-being.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field is required. We seek an interdisciplinary engineer or scientist with the ability to integrate the use of remote sensing technologies for management of agricultural or natural systems. The applicant should have a strong background in remote sensing analysis and modeling of complex environmental systems. It is desired that the candidate has previous experience in remote sensing sensors, applications and/or theory leveraging multiple sensor platforms as well as experience developing or using Artificial Intelligence and other analysis methods. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to UF core values.

Preferred

Postdoctoral experience and a clearly established publication record in areas related to this position are also desired.

Background Information

The Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department is a unit in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the University of Florida and has a variety of teaching, research and extension education programs. The Department is comprised of 34 faculty members located on the Gainesville campus, 6 faculty located across the state at research and education centers, 7 courtesy faculty and 20 support personnel (see website), and consistently ranks in the top 5 Agricultural and Biological Engineering programs nationwide.
