Assistant or Associate Professor, Africa Since 1750
About the Role
The Department of History at Northwestern University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with tenure in the history of Africa since 1750 whose research focuses on one or more regions in East, Southern, or Central Africa.
Responsibilities
- Teach four courses annually over the course of three academic quarters
- Advise graduate students
- Contribute to a vibrant interdisciplinary community of Africanists both in and beyond the History Department
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in History or an adjacent field by the time of appointment
- Scholars who work in African languages will be prioritized
- Scholars who concentrate on the period prior to the First World War will be prioritized

Pay
- Assistant Professor: $90,000 – $105,000
- Associate Professor: $105,000 – $155,000
This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment, does not include summer salary, and is subject to negotiation. The pay offered will be determined based on factors including experience and qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal comparators, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
