About the role
The Assistant Nurse Manager for the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) leads and manages direct care nursing functions of the CSU team to assure that health services, medical care, medical/health professions education, and evidence-based practice research programs are delivered effectively and efficiently. Positions in this job family will have direct patient care responsibilities. Efforts will focus on planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical and education programs of clinical departments.
Responsibilities
- Hiring: Hires or assist in hiring nursing unit staff through effective and timely recommendations.
- Staff Development: Develop and manage the talents, strengths, and behaviors of assigned staff as directed by the Nurse Manager.
- Affords staff incentives/rewards for contribution towards achievement of service excellence.
- Completes staff evaluations for assigned staff, on time with written, solid justification.
- Affirms staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Reviews attendance data, recognizes trends and takes appropriate follow-up with staff. Knowledgeable of University of Iowa policies and Federal laws regarding leave and accommodation processes.
- Understands and applies appropriately the provisions in the union contracts.
- Creates an atmosphere which provides for effective recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
- Encourages staff/employees to meet or exceed customers needs and expectations.
- Manages operating expenses for the unit or clinic. Review with nurse leaders financial reports and provide insights to budget variances. Recommend budget ideas, resources and cost containment strategies.
- Collaborates with nurse leaders to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement. Implement and maintain standards and quality plans. Engage staff in meeting plan goals.
- Uses customer feedback in planning and providing service.
- Communicates with physicians, staff and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic. Communicate with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues.
- Utilizes human resource data and budgetary information to formulate recommendations to Nurse Manager and/or directors.
- Provides evaluative feedback to staff members and health care students.
- Coaches the staff in implementation of standards of care, professional development, promotes staff specialty & clinical certifications, adherence to the standards of regulatory bodies (i.e., The Joint Commission, OSHA, and other regulatory bodies as appropriate).
- Educates and mentors staff in the management of complex patient care issues.
- Works with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences.
- Supports unit evidence-based practice research initiatives.
- Sets up and monitors the units operating budget.
- Makes sound judgments after gathering factual, objective information.
- Creates and maintains a workplace of choice/which motivates employees to work at optimal efficiency; encourages staff to regularly establish goals and objectives toward career development.
- Serves as a resource for patient care problems. May provide some patient care.
- Collaborates with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans.

Requirements
- Baccalaureate in Nursing is required.
- 1+ years of nursing experience with demonstrated skills in leadership.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs).
- Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail, and thoroughness.
- Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments and staff.
- Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education.
- Demonstrated skill in leadership/management and experience in clinical practice required.
- Strong clinical assessment/skills.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrates excellent problem-solving skills.
- Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam with in two years of start date.
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa.
- Master’s Degree (MSN, MBA or MHA) preferred.
- 3+ years of nursing experience in behavioral health.
- Experience with a large academic medical center.
- Experience in a union environment.
- Member/ involvement with professional organizations.
Qualifications
