Position Purpose
The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Manager in overseeing daily Meat Department operations to achieve sales, profitability, customer service, and operational goals. This position assists with team leadership, merchandising, inventory control, food safety compliance, and maintaining high standards for product quality and department presentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Department Operations
- Assist in managing all daily Meat Department functions.
- Ensure meat and seafood products are properly stocked, rotated, displayed, and merchandised.
- Maintain product freshness, quality, and presentation standards.
- Assist with ordering, inventory management, and shrink control.
- Verify pricing, signage, and promotional programs are accurately executed.
- Ensure department equipment and facilities are properly maintained and operational.
- Customer Service
- Deliver exceptional customer service and promote a positive shopping experience.
- Assist customers with product selection, cooking recommendations, and special orders.
- Address customer questions and concerns promptly and professionally.
- Promote department products, programs, and seasonal offerings.
- Foster customer loyalty through product knowledge and service excellence.
- Leadership and Team Development
- Assist with training, coaching, and development of department associates.
- Provide daily direction and support to ensure operational efficiency.
- Help create employee schedules that support business needs and productivity goals.
- Encourage teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment.
- Support compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Food Safety and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety requirements.
- Monitor proper handling, storage, labeling, and rotation of all products.
- Conduct routine quality and freshness checks.
- Assist with department audits, inspections, and corrective action plans.
- Promote safe work practices and proper equipment usage.
- Financial Performance
- Assist in achieving department sales, gross profit, labor, and shrink objectives.
- Monitor inventory levels and product movement to maximize sales opportunities.
- Support expense control and waste reduction initiatives.
- Assist with maintaining accurate inventory records.
- Contribute to action plans that improve department performance.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous Meat Department experience required.
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Knowledge of meat merchandising, inventory control, shrink management, and food safety practices.
- Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
- Ability to effectively lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and move products weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and more with assistance when necessary.
- Ability to work in refrigerated and freezer environments.
- Ability to safely operate knives, saws, grinders, slicers, wrappers, and other department equipment.

- Retail grocery Meat Department environment.
- Frequent exposure to cold temperatures, moisture, and food preparation equipment.
