Assistant Manager, Fleet Operations -Rail Services

About the role

The Assistant Manager, Fleet Operations, Rail Services is responsible for the leadership and oversight of friction management equipment. Primary responsibilities include safety, reliability, operations, crew leadership, maintenance excellence, housekeeping of assigned equipment, on-the-job training, certification compliance, talent and performance management for all crew members, resulting in service delivery excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Talent Development
    • Monitor crew member performance in collaboration with field leaders and continuously assess the competence of technicians and other key field personnel.
    • Provide on-the-job training to crew members in operations and maintenance practices.
    • Make recommendations for promotions, advancements, salary adjustments, or disciplinary actions.
  • Safety and Operational Excellence
    • Conduct scheduled, structured visits to operating equipment to assess procedural and rules compliance, audit safety practices, verify product quality, and gauge customer satisfaction.
    • Maintain multiple units of fleet equipment in peak operating condition (with at least 98% availability) by monitoring compliance with preventive maintenance programs and making timely repair and replacement decisions.
    • Identify and recommend improvement opportunities in equipment performance, safety practices, crew performance, or organizational structure by reviewing performance metrics.
  • Business Management Support
    • Support Operations leadership in delivering financial results for assigned machines in accordance with the budget, including labor, material, travel, overhaul, and improvement projects.
    • Assist in developing and documenting project plans for projects and miscellaneous field projects, collaborating with the Manager on key repair or replacement decisions.
    • Audit assigned equipment inventory to ensure authorized levels are maintained.
  • Communications
    • Develop and maintain relationships with key contacts on customer railroads to manage service and quality expectations, maximize track access and production, and handle disputes prior to escalation.
    • Effectively communicate consistent messaging between the Hamel office and field crews.
    • Draft machine condition reports, personnel performance evaluations, safety compliance audits, and general operational status updates in a clear and professional manner.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience:
    • 3+ years of knowledge and understanding of fleet operations function.
    • Ability to manage multiple work sites with a focus on people, safety, speed, performance, and reliability.
    • Ability to make sound business decisions in accordance with Company values, mission, and vision.
    • Experience managing 24/7 field operations.
  • Licenses/Certifications:
    • All railroad-specific certifications to operate on track.
    • Loram Operating Rules and Certification.
    • All Loram-required e-Learning, on-the-job, and third-party safety training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: Associate’s Degree or Technical Certification.
  • Experience:
    • 2+ years understanding Loram Maintenance of Way equipment’s role in a highly demanding customer service environment.
    • 1+ year managing multiple work sites with a focus on people, safety, speed, performance, and reliability.
    • 1+ year of knowledge and understanding of fleet operations function, LMW’s process, products, services, and customer relationships.
    • 1+ year demonstrating mastery of technical skills such as mechanical and electrical machine operations.
  • Licenses/Certifications:
    • All railroad-specific certifications to operate on track.
    • Loram Operating Rules and Certification.
    • All Loram-required e-Learning, on-the-job, and third-party safety training.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination and role-specific assessments, including:
    • DOT Physical Exam
    • Regulated (DOT) DS/BAT
    • Human Performance Evaluation (HPE)
    • Audiogram
  • Successful completion of an eVerifile/eRailSafe background check as required by Loram’s railroad customers; ongoing eligibility subject to compliance with eRailSafe standards.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license; Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check conducted upon hire and annually thereafter.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
  • Employment verification.

Working Conditions

  • 100% or more travel, including international, using any method of transportation.
  • Ability to apply high levels of cognitive, analytical, retention, and reasoning skills.
  • Excellent communication skills used within any social context.
  • Physical demands include the ability to stand, sit, walk, reach, balance, stoop, kneel, hear, taste, smell, and see up close, at distances, colors, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Tolerate variable and sometimes extreme physical conditions during visits or inspections of company equipment in a railroad environment.

Pay

The pay range for this position is between $93,900 and $141,000. Compensation is determined based on factors such as skills, competencies, education, and experience. Certain positions may be eligible for an annual bonus and paid time off in addition to base compensation.
