Assistant - Learning Commons
About the role
The Learning Commons Assistant acts as a primary point of contact for the Pukui Learning Commons, providing essential clerical, technical, and administrative support to maximize the effective use of its expanded resources, collections, and spaces. A critical component of this role is maintaining an atmosphere conducive for study and ensuring the safety and positive behavior of students within the new, larger, multi-access facility and its various learning zones.
Responsibilities
- Maintain constant supervision of students across the significantly larger facility to ensure safety, including monitoring multiple entrances and exits.
- Physically check and supervise areas not visible from the main floor, such as the two silent study rooms, to ensure student safety and maintain the integrity of the quiet study environment.
- Enforce all Pukui Learning Commons rules and guidelines, including the policy to keep food off the main floor to protect books and archives, particularly due to direct access from the café.
- Use discretion to correct and reward student behavior, assist students with managing behaviors and resolving conflicts, and communicate escalated behavioral issues and concerns to the appropriate faculty.
- Act as the welcoming and professional front face of the Learning Commons, directing visitors and managing students as they arrive for class.
- Aid in daily library coverage, including shelving books and covering the checkout desk as needed.
- Be responsible for covering after-hours supervision, as Pukui will need to remain open after normal school hours.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Two (2) years of experience working with students in an educational, recreational, or structured environment (e.g., school, summer camps, community centers, etc.).
- Demonstrated experience in customer service or front-line administration.
- Basic experience or familiarity with library operation (e.g., shelving, book circulation, or inventory).
