Job Summary

The Athletics Coach fulfills the mission of St. Joseph Catholic School by developing, collaborating, and administering the program in a way that adequately prepares the student-athletes for interscholastic competition and beyond. The regular season occurs during the school year in accordance with the TAPPS Calendar. The off-season occurs in the months before and after the regular season. The spring and summer are used for summer camps / sport-specific instruction (SSIs). This is a stipend position. Open teaching fields can be linked for the right candidates. Stipend-only positions are not benefits-eligible. We are a TAPPS member school.

Ministerial Character
Catholic schools in the Diocese of Austin are canonically obedient to the Bishop and assist him in fulfilling his ministry and canonical obligations. Pastors, presidents, and principals serve as leaders of the schools to make Christ's mission present and enduring in the schools. In order to fulfill Christ's mission, the school leaders employ suitable, chosen collaborators, sharing with them Christ's mission and entrusting to them various responsibilities. Positions employed in this School help extend the ministry of the School leaders in particular ways as outlined in the job description.

Responsibilities

  • Supports and upholds the philosophy and the mission of the Catholic Church
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Serves as a collaborator, assisting the School leaders in the performance of their ministry
  • Conducts practice sessions and games according to local diocesan policy and league regulations
  • Schedules practices and games in consultation with the Athletic Director
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters
  • Models professional conduct and sensible sportsmanship, while instilling these characteristics within team members
  • Maintains physical fitness and readiness of participants, and reports injuries to parents and school officials in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Continually monitors and supervises all team members at home and on the road
  • Teaches essential safety skills and strategies to student-athletes
  • Collaborates with Athletic Trainer and Strength & Conditioning Coach to facilitate rehab of injured athletes and return-to-play protocol
  • Fulfills school transportation rules and procedures
  • Attends all required staff events and fosters relationships outside of the court or field
  • Emphasizes the importance of prayer before and after all practices, games, & contests
  • Models professional dress for all games & contests

Requirements

  • Able to instruct athletes about proper strategy, skills, and rules of the sport
  • Able to motivate student-athletes to perform optimally as individuals and as members of a team
  • Uses approved, corrective, and positive discipline procedures in dealing with inappropriate student conduct
  • Collaborates with school personnel to enhance the work environment and support academic programming
  • Conferences with parents upon request and responds to messages in a timely manner

Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or GED (preferably a Bachelor’s degree)
  • Current CPR / First Aid certification
  • Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) compliant
  • 2-3 years coaching experience (preferably at the JH or HS level)

Training

  • Must submit an Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) Application for Ministry upon acceptance of employment offer
  • Participate in an EIM Basic abuse prevention training workshop
  • Maintain EIM compliance during the entire term of employment
