Assistant Flag Football Coach

About the Role

Under the supervision of the principal and the athletic director, the assistant coach helps coordinate and administer the sport within the guidelines, rules, and regulations of the National Federation of High Schools, the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the Diocese of Phoenix, the school, the athletic department, and the specific sport. This role contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and the community, cooperating with Christ in the academic, spiritual, and social education of high school students.

This position requires effective communication, flexibility, forward thinking, and the ability to manage deadlines. The coach is expected to seek the latest coaching practices, rely on experience and judgment, and demonstrate creativity and latitude in planning and accomplishing goals.

Responsibilities

• Instructs athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and training to achieve individual and team success while promoting the Pursuing Victory with Honor Program.
• Maintains discipline, handles grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation.
• Assists in the overall functioning of the specific sports program.
• Assists the Head Coach in ensuring the venue for the sport is safe and all equipment is regulation-compliant, safe, properly maintained, and inventoried.
• Coordinates supervision of student-athletes in all areas of play, locker rooms, and other venues used by the sport.
• Maintains open communication with faculty, staff, and parents regarding the sport.
• Advises student-athletes on academics in conjunction with faculty and staff.
• Assists in the college recruiting and scholarship application process with the athletic director and guidance staff.
• Performs other job-related tasks as deemed necessary or requested by the principal or athletic director.
• Obtains necessary certificates and participates in continual professional development.
• Maintains detailed and accurate records as required by the school.
• Serves as a mentor and campus minister to all students.

Requirements

• Must demonstrate personal self-discipline and adaptability in routine and unexpected situations.
• Must use good judgment in daily encounters and demonstrate knowledge of good teaching techniques and child psychology.
• Must maintain appropriate grooming and dress as stated in the faculty handbook.
• Must be in good physical condition and able to stand for extended periods outside in heat and cold.
• Must have initiative, creativity, problem-solving skills, and good judgment in handling different personalities and emerging situations.
• Must actively listen to assess individual students, teachers, and program needs.
• Must be proficient in communication skills with both children and adults.
• Must maintain a positive attitude in normal and crisis situations.
• Must work cooperatively with others and have the ability to delegate.

Qualifications

• Preference given to Catholic teachers.
• Certified by the Arizona State Department of Education or AIA as a coach and meets applicable NCA requirements.
• Must meet Diocese of Phoenix requirements for employment.
• Completed Safe Environment Training and signed the Code of Conduct.
• FBI Fingerprint clearance completed.
• Current Arizona State driver’s license is desirable.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
• Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Requires close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Must be able to stand for periods of time outside in heat and cold.
• Moderate noise level in the work environment.
• Some evening and weekend hours required.

Pay

This is a stipend position based on the season of the sport coached. Base salaries and stipends are established by the Leadership Team under the guidance of the Diocese of Phoenix.
