Description

Under direction, provides professional nutrition services to participants of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program and clients of other nutrition components within the Public Health Department; and performs related duties as required.

Examples of Duties

  • Assesses the nutritional status of and provides nutrition counseling to high-risk pregnant or breast-feeding women, infants, and young children in the WIC program, and clients in the nutrition components of Maternal and Child Health (MCH), obstetrics, and primary care clinics of the Public Health Department;
  • through the automated system, reviews participants’ medical and nutrition information to assess nutritional status;
  • determines participants’ eligibility for program services by reviewing applications, nutrition questionnaires, and medical charts;
  • develops nutrition plans for participants and helps participants select and prepare foods based on their physical, financial, and psycho-social needs;
  • through the automated system, documents eligibility, nutrition assessment and education, and referral information in compliance with State regulations.
  • Assists senior-level staff in reviewing and selecting nutritional education material such as pamphlets, textbooks, and audio-visual aids for use by participants;
  • develops informational material for dissemination to individuals, groups, and the media.
  • Counsels individuals and groups on nutrition-related topics;
  • conducts outreach activities and serves as a nutrition expert by responding to inquiries from the general public, sending related information to various community groups, and by attending health fairs, and community and physician groups;
  • attends workshops and conferences to keep abreast of the current issues and trends in the field;
  • coordinates, facilitates, and participates in WIC program surveys and studies.

Employment Standards

  • Possession of a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in nutrition and dietetics, and one year of training in a dietetic internship approved by the American Dietetic Association. Must be R.D. eligible upon appointment, and must obtain a dietitian registration from the American Dietetic Association within one year of appointment, as a condition of continued employment.
  • Additional Qualifications: Incumbents may be required to travel independently to clinic sites; may be required to work evenings and weekends; ability to speak/read/write Spanish fluently may be required for some positions.
  • Knowledge of: nutrition principles and practices; current trends and issues in nutrition; methods of nutrition and dietary assessments; comparative costs of foods in relation to their nutritional value; counseling techniques; community resources and services; and standard office software.
  • Ability to: learn, interpret, and apply program rules and regulations; perform diet analyses; learn nutritional habits or cultural needs of program participants; establish rapport with and motivate individuals from diverse backgrounds; conduct group presentations; learn the educational methods appropriate for adults and adolescents; establish and maintain working relationships with superiors, co-workers, and the general public; maintain client confidentiality.

Additional Information

  • Vacation Leave 12 to 25 days per year depending on length of public employment
