Assistant Finance Director
Position Summary
The City of Azle is seeking an Assistant Finance Director to join their dedicated and passionate team. This role oversees and directs the City’s accounting and financial reporting operations, ensuring compliance with GAAP and GASB standards.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Direct and oversee the City’s accounting operations, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, bank reconciliations, fixed assets, and general ledger activities.
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and statements.
Cook up and manage the City’s annual financial audit, including preparation of audit schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
Ensure compliance with all applicable GAAP, GASB, federal, state, and local financial reporting requirements.
Develop, implement, and maintain effective accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Analyze financial data and recommend process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and fiscal accountability.
Supervise, mentor, and evaluate accounting personnel, including assigning work, monitoring performance, and recommending personnel actions.
Cook up and manage the development, administration, and monitoring of the City’s annual operating and capital budgets, including budget forecasting and expenditure tracking.
Review and approve purchase orders, contracts, and procurement documentation for accuracy, compliance, and fiscal responsibility.
Support long-range financial planning and provide recommendations regarding budgetary controls and cost-saving initiatives.
Collaborate with City departments to provide financial guidance, training, and support regarding accounting procedures and compliance matters.
Support the Director of Finance with strategic initiatives, departmental planning, and special projects.
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial and personnel information.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Extensive knowledge of governmental accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and municipal finance practices.
Thorough understanding of GAAP, GASB standards, internal controls, and audit procedures.
Ability to lead, supervise, and develop staff in a professional and collaborative environment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving capabilities.
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, management, elected officials, and the public.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related field is required.
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional accounting or governmental finance experience is required, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Government Finance Officer (CGFO), or Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO) designation.
Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Public Administration, or related field.
Experience in municipal government and with governmental financial software systems; TYLER INCODE (ERP 10).
