About the role

The Assistant Facility Security Officer (AFSO) supports the Facility Security Officers (FSOs) in managing the classified program at George Mason University. The AFSO provides onsite direct security support at the Mason Springfield Facility and occasionally reports to the Fairfax or Arlington campuses.

Responsibilities

  • Administers day-to-day security operations, including physical security controls, personnel processing, program reviews, visitor control, document control system, violation investigations and reports, receipt/dispatch/destruction/mail logs, visit authorization requests, end-of-day checks, etc.
  • Serves as a COMSEC custodian (or Alternate custodian) and assists with or performs semi-annual material inventories, as required.
  • Performs courier duties, as required.
  • Utilizes DoD database systems.
  • Initiates personal security clearances and maintains all records related to clearances.
  • Affords assistance in developing and establishing an effective security awareness, training, and education program.
  • Conducts initial security briefings, debriefings, indoctrinations, pre/post foreign travel briefings, and refresher briefings, as appropriate, and tracks annual training requirements and requirements of cleared personnel.
  • Conducts all required reporting to the U.S. Government, including foreign travel and incident reporting.
  • Maintains DD254s and prepares and issues DD254s to cleared subcontractors.
  • Responds to U.S. Government inquiries related to Mason’s security program.
  • Participates in self-inspections and annual assessments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Criminal Justice, Engineering, Computing, or closely related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience as an AFSO/Security Specialist.
  • Experience interpreting the NISPOM and other relevant DoD security guidance.
  • Experience using DoD systems such as DISS, NISS, SWFT, NBIS and NCAISS.
  • Thorough working knowledge of the NISPOM and other relevant DoD security guidance.
  • Knowledge and experience with DoD systems such as DISS, NISS, SWFT, NBIS and NCAISS.
  • Excellent communication skills (speaking, writing, and listening), including the ability to provide clear guidance to cleared personnel and draft documentation such as DD254s, security procedures, and training materials.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills working in a multi-tasking environment and the capacity to track and manage multiple technical artifacts and tasks in parallel.
  • Demonstrated commitment to security, integrity, and ethics, including the ability to properly handle personal, confidential, and Privacy Act information.
  • Ability to answer after-hour alarms.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Active Top Secret security clearance and ability to meet eligibility requirements for access to SCI.
  • FSO certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field.
  • COMSEC Custodian certificate.
  • Experience developing and implementing OPSEC, Insider Threat, SOPs, and emergency action plans.
  • Experience submitting SCI Nomination packages.
  • COMSEC Custodian experience.
  • Experience with SCIF construction.
  • Experience with Access Control and Intrusion Detection Systems.
  • Experience with SIMS.
  • Knowledge of Access Control and Intrusion Detection Systems.
  • Ability to manage SCI programs.
  • Knowledge and previous experience with SIMS security management software.
