Essential Duties

  • Represent The State of Texas in matters handled by the Criminal District Attorney’s Office, including CPS cases.
  • Provide legal advice to elected county officials and department heads.
  • Review and negotiate contracts on behalf of Lubbock County.
  • Defend Civil Rights Act claims, Texas Tort Claims Act claims, inmate litigation claims, and various other civil claims asserted against Lubbock County, its elected officials, and employees.
  • Aid County offices with public information requests.
  • Prepare civil pleadings and discovery in state and federal trial and appellate courts.
  • Review mental health commitments and appear for hearings.
  • Prepare pleadings and appear for hearings in asset forfeiture cases.
  • Prepare pleadings and appear for hearings in bond forfeiture matters.
  • Advise the Criminal Division of the District Attorney’s Office on matters affecting them that have civil implications.
  • Review reports from many different law enforcement agencies, CPS caseworkers, counselors, schools and medical facilities.
  • Attend court settings and hearings.
  • Correspond with law enforcement officers, victims, witnesses, judges and other attorneys.
  • Prepare CPS cases for trial, gather and review evidence, locate and interview victims and witnesses, interview police officers, plan jury trials and review case law.
  • Prosecute CPS trials, select juries, make opening statements, question witnesses, introduce evidence and make arguments before both judges and juries.
  • Cook up representation with outside legal counsel representing Lubbock County.
  • Perform other general Civil legal work and special tasks.
  • Efficiently manage a caseload in a fast-paced and rewarding work environment.
  • Review and interpret both simple and complex legal issues.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and the general public.

Position Requirements

  • Must possess a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • Must be currently licensed to practice law in the State of Texas, and must be in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
  • Must be able to pass a drug test.
  • Must have a clean criminal history.

Supplemental Information

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must possess excellent research and writing skills and a strong ability to communicate and get along with others. Must possess sufficient common sense and legal skills combined to make important legal decisions on complex issues. Need to have basic computer and typing skills and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Daily duties require sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, and bending as well as speaking to and listening to other people. This job will be performed in the usual and customary office and courtroom settings. Minimal heavy lifting and driving duties are required. The workweek is usually 40 hours per week, but may be longer if you are preparing for trial.
  • SALARY AND BENEFITS: The salary range is $80,000 to $95,000, depending on experience. The successful applicant will also receive a full benefits package from Lubbock County. This includes paid holidays off, personal leave time, and other benefits in addition to health, life, dental, and vision insurance.
