Assistant Director, Veterans Resource Center (Student Services Professional IV)

About the Department
The Veteran’s Resource Center within the Division of Student Affairs at Cal State Fullerton supports military-connected students academically, personally, and professionally. The center engages with students to meet their varied needs and guide them toward success, fostering an inclusive space for all.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the VRC Director to deliver and integrate student support services tailored to active duty, National Guard, reservists, veterans, and military-family members.
- Lead and implement campus-wide and student affairs initiatives and success efforts under the supervision of the Director.
- Design and coordinate programs that academically support veteran and military-connected students, promote access and retention, enrich the college experience, and enhance student development.
- Lead, design, coordinate, implement, and evaluate student support services, high-impact practices, and co-curricular learning and assessment efforts.
- Recommend courses of action regarding sensitive and complex student issues and serve as a liaison for student-related concerns.
- Recommend university-wide policies pertaining to veteran and military-connected students to the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Strategic Enrollment Management.
- Contribute to and/or design VRC publications, retention management initiatives, and college climate assessment efforts.
- Contribute to a wide variety of initiatives for the Division of Student Affairs and Strategic Enrollment Management.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field, plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution.
- Four years of professional student services work experience, including advising students individually and in groups, and analyzing and resolving complex student services problems.
- A master’s degree in counseling, clinical psychology, social work, or a job-related field may substitute for one year of professional experience.
- A doctoral degree and appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may substitute for two years of professional experience.
- Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the assigned program area, or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge.
- General knowledge of Student Services policies, practices, and activities outside the assigned program; principles, problems, and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel, and fiscal management; and advanced statistical and research methods.
- Ability to carry out complex assignments without detailed instructions; advise students on varied and complex matters; determine appropriate courses of action in sensitive interactions; reason logically and solve organizational problems; plan and coordinate actions to implement decisions; analyze and define policy or procedural problems; and establish effective working relationships.
- A background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in student development, higher education administration, counseling, or one of the behavioral sciences.
- Familiarity with student development and interpersonal communication theory, as well as group dynamic concepts.
- Experience advising student organizations, program/leadership development, and personal academic or career counseling.
- Skilled in individual counseling and advising, as well as group process facilitation.
- Ability to design and implement leadership training experiences for college-based student organizations.
- Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the assigned program, as well as general knowledge of Student Services programs outside the assigned area.
- General knowledge of military culture and veteran experience.
- In-depth understanding of veteran and military-connected education benefits, including those from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet).
License/Certifications
- A valid California driver’s license.
Pay
Classification range: $6,320 - $9,014 per month. Hiring range: $6,320 - $6,994 per month, depending on qualifications.
Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM; occasional early morning, evening, and/or weekend hours.
