About the role

The Assistant Director oversees the planning, organizing, and tactical leadership of the Sun Devil Fitness and Wellness department at the ASU West Valley campus. This position is part of the university-wide Sun Devil Fitness and Wellness management team.

Responsibilities

  • Manages all elements of Sun Devil Fitness and Wellness that serve the local campus community, including delivery of dynamic and effective programs, management and oversight of the day-to-day operations, and staffing (full-time and part-time).
  • Directly supervises 1-3 full-time staff members who oversee intramural sports, aquatics, safety education, marketing, fitness programs, and operations.
  • Supervises the coordination of student staff across all departments. Responsibilities include recruitment, hiring, training, and performance evaluations of all student staff members.
  • Manages the student wage budget, operational budget, and programming budget for the location.
  • Maintains flexibility by utilizing critical thinking and independent problem-solving.
  • Performs other duties as specified.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field including two (2) years managerial experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Physical Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Two or more years of experience in recreation, sports, or a related environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including managing and developing employees or teams in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  • Experience building collaborative partnerships with university and community stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships and delegate responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and deliver accurate, high-quality service.

Desired Qualifications
