About the role
The Assistant Director of Nursing RN supervises, analyzes, delegates, and evaluates nursing services to maintain quality standards of care and advise medical staff, department heads, and Administrator in matters related to nursing services.
Responsibilities
- Reviews daily work assignments to ensure they meet regulatory compliance and provide consistent staffing whenever possible.
- Assists DON in daily managing of the nursing staff, scheduling breaks, reassigning employees from one area to another as facility needs dictate, and enforcing policies with the authority to issue Coaching and Corrective Action with HR/Administrator guidance.
- Responsible for recruitment, training, clinical orientation, supervision, scheduling, time cards, and personnel issues in the nursing department.
- Participates with the Medical Consultants and the Administrator in the selection of all potential new admissions to the facility and assesses items needed to meet the new resident’s needs, including admission, retention, and discharge of residents.
- Ensures necessary equipment, supplies, and staffing are available for the delivery of the prescribed resident/patient care.
- Manages the nursing department budget and provides Administrator with budgetary planning information related to equipment needs and staffing.
- Completes rounds of the facility at least daily to ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Collaborates with the DON and Administrator in the planning of staff development programs that will enhance staff knowledge in providing quality resident care.
- Works with regional personnel to continuously improve the quality of resident/patient care.
- Strategic plans or program development for improved outcomes to reduce unnecessary returns to acute care.
- Mentors nursing leaders and prepares for succession planning of role.
- Ensures that all elements of the facility’s Abuse & Neglect policies are maintained and enforced.
- Knows Resident Rights and helps residents/patients exercise and/or protect their rights.
- Follows and adheres to company policies and procedures implementing HIPAA requirements for the privacy and security of protected health information.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be CPR trained and possess a current BLS certification (recognized organizations include the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross).
- Proven strong management skills, including delegating responsibility to subordinates, performance management, conflict management, and leading through others.
- Must have good financial and management skills.
- Must be able to adapt to a flexible work schedule and occasional overnight travel.
- Possess a special interest in, and a positive attitude about, working with short and long-term care residents and the elderly.
- Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse range of audiences and settings: handle emotional situations, manage resources to accomplish resident care objectives, assess operational, staffing, and fiscal needs, analyze complex written documents, and work long and irregular hours.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Demonstrates basic computer knowledge and ability with an aptitude to learn company applications, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree from an accredited School of Nursing.
- Current RN license with the state required.
- Prefer previous nursing and leadership experience of at least three years; ADON preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Walking, reaching, bending, lifting, extended sitting, grasping, fine hand coordination, pushing and pulling, ability to distinguish smells and temperatures, all with or without the aid of mechanical devices is required.
- Travel up to 10%.
- Limited potential for exposure to environmental hazards. Understanding and adherence to company safety standards and protocols required.
