Assistant Director of Nursing ( ADON ) – Registered Nurse ( RN )

About the role

Sumter Health & Rehabilitation is seeking an experienced and motivated Registered Nurse (RN) to serve as Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON).

Responsibilities

  • Aid the Director of Nursing with the daily operation and management of the nursing department.
  • Provide clinical leadership and support to Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs).
  • Monitor resident care and help ensure high standards of clinical quality.
  • Conduct clinical rounds and assist with resident assessments and changes in condition.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop nursing staff.
  • Absorb nursing staff orientation, education, and competency development.
  • Support infection prevention, quality assurance, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Review clinical documentation for accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with physicians, pharmacy, therapy, and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate resident care.
  • Absorb admissions, care planning, and clinical operations.
  • Assist with survey readiness and compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve resident outcomes and nursing department performance.
  • Foster a positive, professional, and accountable nursing culture.
  • Take on nursing leadership responsibilities in the Director of Nursing's absence as needed.

Qualifications

  • Current Alabama Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing – REQUIRED.
  • CPR/BLS certification.
  • Previous nursing experience required.
  • Nursing leadership experience as an ADON, Unit Manager, Nursing Supervisor, Staff Development Coordinator, Charge Nurse, or similar role preferred.
  • Skilled nursing, rehabilitation, long-term care, post-acute care, or geriatric nursing experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations governing skilled nursing and long-term care.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to effectively coach, mentor, and develop nursing staff.
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Dependable, professional, and committed to exceptional resident care.
