Duties & Responsibilities
- Aids in developing policies, objectives, and standards for nursing service and education.
- Aids in preparing personnel, supply, and equipment budgets.
- Aids in developing administrative procedures and programs for patient care.
- May assist in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing service in a major clinical division or a home health agency in a hospital.
- Aids in planning, organizing, and conducting a nursing education program.
- Might assume responsibility for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing service during evening and night shifts.
- Directs activities of the Supervisor of Nurses.
- Prepares and makes periodic and daily reports on administrative matters relating to staff and patient management.
- Participates in the direction and implementation of a quality assurance program for nursing.
- Attends and chairs regular staff meetings with nursing personnel.
- Assesses nursing services by making rounds, conducting chart reviews, and evaluating patient care.
Minimum Qualifications
- Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.
- Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity.
- A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience.
Department Preferences
- Supports the mission, philosophy, standards, goals, and objectives of the institution, department, unit, and service line.
- Collaborates with the DON and Nurse Educator in identifying, addressing, and utilizing available resources to meet the learning needs of professional and ancillary staff members.
- Identifies, initiates investigation, and proactively responds on an immediate basis to potential and actual risk management issues per standards and institutional policies, reporting same to DON and to leadership on duty as indicated.
- Works with the DON and other nursing leadership to facilitate and support a 24-hour environment conducive to creativity in practice and cooperation with all members of the health care team.
- Participates in interviewing and selecting staff for the unit or clinical service.
- Participates in developing the philosophy, objectives, and policies of the Nursing Department.
- Oversees the development, revision, and implementation of department policies and procedures to assure attainment of goals and standards set by Nursing Department.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledgeable in Fetal monitoring, high risk OB, inpatient OB.
- Ability to apply nursing process toward achievement of specific outcomes in an organized fashion which addresses patient/family satisfaction.
- Familiarity with Fetal Monitor, BP Monitor, EKG Machine, Cardiac Monitor.
