Assistant Director, Intensive English Center (IEC)

37.5 hours per week, 12 months per year, full-time position located at the Avon Williams campus.

About the Role

Tennessee State University invites applicants for the Assistant Director of the Intensive English Center (IEC). The selected candidate will support English language instruction, student services, and program administration within the IEC.

Responsibilities

• Plan, deliver, and assess English as a second language courses according to IEC’s established curriculum and respective course syllabi.
• Adopt and implement a language teaching approach consistent with IEC’s Teaching Philosophy.
• Evaluate, grade, and submit student performance on time; track and report student attendance.
• Prepare course materials to complement instruction.
• Attend and actively participate in departmental meetings, including faculty meetings and the IEC Annual Retreat, providing feedback on curriculum, assessment, placement, progress, and promotion or other program-related matters.
• Prepare data and create student transcripts at the end of every session.
• Analyze assessment data to inform curriculum improvements and instructional practices.
• Oversee student academic progress, including records, tutoring, transcripts, and book distribution.
• Ensure compliance with accreditation requirements, maintaining all necessary documentation.
• Facilitate professional development and feedback to faculty for instructional excellence.
• Assist in the accreditation process, ensuring adherence to regulatory and institutional standards.
• Design and oversee technology-enhanced learning solutions for the Intensive English Program (IEP).
• Communicate and maintain trust relationships with students, university staff, and authorities.
• Act as the point of contact with the TSU community and develop strategies to promote the IEC and its services within the institution.
• Maintain cordial, respectful, and academic relationships with all students, staff, assistants, officials, and guests on the institute and university campuses.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate cultural, social, and academic activities that promote student engagement, cross-cultural relations, and successful adjustment to campus and community life.
• Establish and maintain relationships with local organizations and businesses to create opportunities for student involvement, volunteering, internships, and cultural exchange.
• Provide guidance and resources that help IEC students navigate daily life in the community, including orientation to local services, transportation, and safety, while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.
• Perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Requirements

• Master’s degree.
• TESOL / TEFL / CELTA certification.
• Minimum of five years of experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL).
• Proven effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
• Proven ability to manage teams and delegate tasks efficiently.
• Demonstrated understanding of higher education infrastructure and academic program administration.
• Effective project management and problem-solving skills.
