About the role
The Environmental Health & Safety/Codes Enforcement Officer at Alfred University serves under the supervision of the Executive Director for Facilities Services. The role ensures compliance with all Local, State, and Federal Environmental Health & Safety regulations and the Uniform Building Code. Additionally, the role acts as a representative and liaison to external entities including federal, state, and local agencies, contractors, suppliers, and various non-profit, educational, government, and community entities.
Responsibilities
- Supervise Environmental Health and Safety Managers/Coordinators
- Implement fire and safety initiatives
- Facilitate fire and safety planning and routine inspections
- Develop and maintain fire safety plans and emergency action plans
- Deliver safety training programs and promote the use of personal protective equipment
- Supervise and direct EH&S staff, prepare performance programs, and provide feedback
- Maintain and manage DEC, EPA, DOL, and PESH records
- Coordinate with local law enforcement, fire departments, and other agencies
- Assist with permit applications and reporting requirements
- Conduct field audits and manage corrective actions
- Support committees and assist with special projects
- Maintain a safe working environment
- Participate in safety training and follow safety rules and protocols
- Provide technical expertise and support on regulatory compliance issues
- Contribute to the overall success of the University by performing other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Safety & Health, EH&S Management, or equivalent experience
- Minimum of five years of experience within Environmental, Health and Safety functions and NYS Uniform Building Codes, including Codes Enforcement Officer certification
- RCRA Hazardous Waste Management and Hazmat & Waste Ground Shipper (DOT) certifications
- Demonstrated collaborative and influencing skills
- Proficiency with office automation/communication software and tools
- Detailed working knowledge of NYS Uniform Building Codes, NFPA, USEPA, OSHA, NYSDOE, and NYSDOL rules and regulations
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Highly effective platform presentation and training delivery skills
- Ability to create EH&S training programs
