About the Role

The Assistant Dining Services Manager oversees all aspects of food service for residents, staff, and guests. This role assists in hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating all food service staff, and ensures meals are prepared according to approved menus and recipes while accommodating special dietary needs.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises dining staff to ensure proper preparation of food in compliance with policies and proper use of raw food and supplies.
  • Ensures the food service area and all equipment meet or exceed sanitation requirements set by federal, state, and local health regulations.
  • Maintains quality standards and stays within budget for food and supply costs.
  • Prepares and presents menu items according to standard recipes.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area, including floors and prep areas.
  • Participates in weekly cleaning routines planned by the Dining Services Director.
  • Reports faulty equipment, broken or chipped glassware, trays, or any potentially dangerous items to the supervisor.
  • Records refrigerator and freezer temperatures twice daily and reports incorrect temperatures immediately.
  • Ensures all leftovers are properly cooled, stored, identified, and dated.
  • Observes good safety practices and pays special attention to portion control.
  • Prepares frozen food items for the next day’s meals and begins prep work in advance.
  • Makes appropriate menu substitutions when approved by the Dining Services Director.
  • Supervises assigned duties to prepare the kitchen for each meal and the next day’s meals (evening shift).
  • Takes and records food temperatures three times daily.
  • Attends staff meetings and in-services as required.
  • Develops a working knowledge of residents' specific dietary requests, preferences, and changes.
  • Maintains courtesy and professionalism with residents, visitors, and staff.
  • Follows confidentiality policies regarding resident information.
  • Supervises dining staff in the absence of the Dining Services Director.
  • Assists in training new dining associates and conducts in-service training as directed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be ServSafe certified or willing to become certified within 60 days of hiring.
  • Must have dining services experience in a management or leadership capacity.
  • Must have a working knowledge of ordering, storing, preparing, and serving in a food service environment, preferably in a senior living community.
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and perform simple calculations.
  • Must be a quick learner and able to apply principles effectively.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods and withstand temperature extremes, wet/humid conditions, and noise.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs regularly or at least eight times per shift.
  • Must be able to carry, pull, or push heavy objects up to 20 feet.
  • Must be organized and able to work well as part of a team.
  • Must maintain a designated uniform during working hours and uphold good personal hygiene and neat appearance.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
