About the role

The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) currently has a portfolio of capital projects valued at $35B, with another $13.6B projected over the next 10-year commitment plan. The In-House Design (IHD) directorate provides design and engineering services to meet operations’ needs, supporting projects from initiation through preliminary design, procurement, construction, and turnover to operations. The Design Services division prepares design and construction documents for water supply, sewer, and wastewater treatment infrastructure.

Under supervision of the Lead Design Engineer, the selected candidate will assist in the implementation of capital projects through the design phase by preparing engineering documents for water tunnels, wastewater treatment systems, and other large, complex facilities. Responsibilities include preparing plans, specifications, and related calculations; conducting field visits; providing design services during construction (DSDC); reviewing shop drawings and material approvals; preparing change orders; conducting research; preparing proposals and reports; witnessing shop testing and commissioning of structural systems; developing project schedules; coordinating with engineers and stakeholders; and documenting issues/resolutions. The selected candidate may also review or oversee staff review of designs prepared by outsourced engineering firms.

This position requires traveling to job sites for investigations and meetings during design and construction phases. A valid NYS Driver’s License may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare engineering plans, specifications, and related calculations for water tunnels, wastewater treatment systems, and other large facilities.
  • Conduct field visits and site investigations.
  • Provide design services during construction (DSDC), including reviewing shop drawings, material approvals, and requests for information.
  • Prepare change orders and technical reports.
  • Witness shop testing and commissioning of structural systems.
  • Develop project schedules and coordinate with engineers and stakeholders.
  • Document issues and resolutions in issues logs.
  • Review or oversee staff review of designs prepared by outsourced engineering firms.
  • Travel to job sites for meetings and inspections as needed.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.

Preferred Skills

  • One year of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering with emphasis on structural work.
  • Degree in structural engineering from an accredited college; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of structural engineering and design of reinforced concrete and steel structures.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) programs such as STAAD Pro, RAM Elements, or SAFE.
  • Experience in planning, layout, and details of contract drawings; specifications; shop drawing review; and field inspections.
  • Experience in shaft and tunnel structural design and/or building/facility design.
  • Experience applying code requirements and preparing formal design calculations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Preference given to candidates who have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

Pay

$66,330.00 – $99,528.00

This position is also open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a Program. New York City Residency is not required.
