About the Role
The Assistant Deli Manager supports the Deli Manager in overseeing all aspects of the Service Deli Department to ensure exceptional customer service, food safety compliance, product quality, sales growth, profitability, and team development. This position assists with daily department operations, production planning, inventory management, merchandising execution, and associate supervision while helping maintain a fresh, safe, and customer-focused department.
Responsibilities
- Department Operations
- Assist in overseeing the daily operations of the Service Deli Department.
- Support execution of company programs, promotional events, and operational initiatives.
- Ensure department standards for cleanliness, organization, safety, and product quality are consistently maintained.
- Monitor department conditions and assist in implementing operational improvements.
- Serve as acting Department Manager in the absence of the Deli Manager.
- Customer Service
- Deliver and promote exceptional customer service throughout the department.
- Assist customers with product selections, catering requests, special orders, and product information.
- Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Support a customer-first culture that drives satisfaction and loyalty.
- Ensure associates provide friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient service.
- Food Production & Product Quality
- Assist in overseeing preparation, packaging, and presentation of deli products.
- Ensure products meet company standards for freshness, quality, and appearance.
- Monitor production levels to meet customer demand while minimizing waste.
- Ensure proper rotation, dating, labeling, and storage procedures are followed.
- Maintain appealing and fully stocked service cases and displays.
- Merchandising & Sales
- Assist with merchandising displays, promotional programs, and seasonal events.
- Ensure pricing, signage, and promotional materials are accurate and current.
- Monitor product movement and support initiatives that drive sales growth.
- Maintain attractive and well-stocked displays throughout operating hours.
- Support catering and special-order business opportunities.
- Inventory Management & Shrink Control
- Assist in managing inventory levels to support sales and minimize out-of-stocks.
- Help order products, supplies, and ingredients based on department needs.
- Monitor inventory rotation and freshness standards.
- Support inventory counts and maintain accurate records.
- Assist in implementing shrink reduction and waste control strategies.
- Food Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor department sanitation practices and cleaning schedules.
- Ensure food handling, storage, cooking, cooling, and holding procedures are followed.
- Maintain required food safety logs and documentation.
- Train and reinforce safe food handling practices among associates.
- Leadership & Team Development
- Assist with training, coaching, and developing department associates.
- Provide guidance and direction during daily operations.
- Support performance management and accountability initiatives.
- Help create schedules that align labor resources with business needs.
- Promote teamwork, engagement, and a positive work environment.
- Financial Accountability
- Assist in managing labor expenses and department operating costs.
- Monitor sales, shrink, productivity, and profitability performance.
- Support execution of plans designed to improve financial results.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and operational effectiveness.
- Help achieve departmental sales and profitability goals.
- Safety & Compliance
- Promote compliance with company policies, procedures, and workplace safety standards.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Ensure associates follow proper equipment operation and safety procedures.
- Address safety concerns promptly and communicate issues to leadership.
- Support accident prevention and safety awareness programs.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous deli, food service, restaurant, or retail experience preferred.
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Knowledge of food safety, food preparation, merchandising, and inventory management.
- Strong communication, customer service, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic computer, scheduling, and reporting skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of products and supplies up to company standards.
- Ability to work in refrigerated, kitchen, and food preparation environments.
- Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and repetitive hand movements.
- Ability to safely operate slicers, ovens, fryers, mixers, scales, and other department equipment.
