Assistant County Attorney I, II, or III - Family Law
About the role
Join our team of over 100 persons in the Anoka County Attorney's Office united by a common mission to preserve the public's trust and serve the interests of justice. This position works within the Family Law Division, providing legal and advisory services to Anoka County Child Support Services and representing Anoka County in family law cases to establish paternity and child support, enforce and modify child support orders, and handle post-hearing proceedings and appeals. The highest volume of court appearances will be in District Court and the Expedited Process.
This is a full-time, exempt, hybrid position located at the Anoka County Government Center in Anoka. Expected work hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., with occasional extra or evening hours required.
Responsibilities
- Represent Anoka County in legal proceedings, including hearings, trials, and appeals.
- Prepare briefs, motions, memoranda of law, opinions, pleadings, agreements, contracts, and other legal documents.
- Conduct pretrial/prehearing preparations.
- Review various legal resources in support of legal research, analyze, and interpret existing laws, regulations, and cases.
- Gather evidence, interview witnesses, and effectively present findings and arguments in state and federal court or other tribunals.
- Confer with parties and the public, negotiate settlements, and provide legal opinions and training to county employees and other government agencies.
- Prepare post-hearing motions and appeals, render legal opinions, review motions and other legal documents, and provide legal counsel to county departments, officials, and employees.
- Draft ordinances, rules, and policies.
- Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with assigned legal team, including legal assistants, paralegals, investigators, and victim witness staff.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in Minnesota (must be licensed by October 2026).
- Successfully complete a fingerprint-based background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience representing a state, county, city, or other government entity.
- Completion of a paid Court of Appeals, Federal, or District Court Judicial Clerkship.
- Experience in effective presentation of cases to a court, arbitrator, referee, mediator, tribunal, or other finder of fact, including rules of court and evidence.
- Experience conducting legal research and data analysis.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with clients, coworkers, and others.
- Proficiency in using technology in everyday legal practice.
Physical Demands and Work Conditions
- Standard office environment, courtrooms, and travel to various county work sites and meetings as needed.
- Work activities may require contact with uncooperative, angry, or hostile clients.
- Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus (e.g., computer work).
- Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.
- Assignments are sedentary but may alternate between sitting, standing, walking, crouching, and kneeling.
- Frequent wrist and finger manipulation for computer work.
- Occasional lifting of 10-20 lbs.
- Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle.
Pay
Salary ranges based on experience and position level:
- Assistant County Attorney I: $85,363 to $119,496 annually ($41.04 to $57.45 per hour).
- Assistant County Attorney II: $98,176 to $137,384 annually ($47.20 to $66.05 per hour). Requires at least two years of directly related experience.
- Assistant County Attorney III: $117,790 to $164,840 annually ($56.63 to $79.25 per hour). Requires at least five years of directly related experience.
