Assistant Coordinator of Transportation

Essential Functions

  • Assists the Coordinator of Transportation with the assignment of bus drivers, bus routes, vehicles, and substitutes for mornings and afternoon shifts, field trips, and extra-curricular activities.
  • Maintains the day-to-day operations of the transportation department and advises the Coordinator of Transportation on developments and situations affecting the department's effective operations.
  • Schedules and facilitates regular safety meetings to inform bus drivers of changes in laws, regulations, and procedures.
  • Maintains state reporting for mileage tracking for contracted and district-owned transportation.
  • Coordinates and manages the development and implementation of training programs for new CDL drivers, assistants, and van drivers.
  • Reviews pertinent data to stay current on all state and federal laws and regulations governing school buses and drivers.
  • Manages tracking of Driver Credentials and scheduling of physicals done by the Trip/Training Coordinator.
  • Coordinates and manages the scheduling and distribution of trip assignments, ensuring they align with established guidelines.
  • Addresses parent requests in conjunction with the Routing Specialists and the Coordinator of Transportation.
  • Maintains the effectiveness of bus driver behavior regarding student discipline.
  • Aids in personnel management and the implementation of new technology, software, etc.
  • Serves as a District vehicle driver of a school bus and/or a van in emergency situations.
  • Submits to Drug/Alcohol testing as required by Federal and State DOT and the District guidelines.
  • Makes oneself available in an emergency situation to be at an accident scene, including after hours.
  • Abides by all district and departmental policies and regulations as written.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Education And/or Certification Required

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Pennsylvania School Bus Instructor or Instructor Coordinator Certification preferred, or willingness to obtain it within 6 months of starting the position.

Experience Needed

  • Pennsylvania CDL Driver's License, Class B, with School Bus, Passenger, and Air Brake endorsements preferred (willingness to train the right candidate).
  • Scheduling, routing, and safe operation of a large fleet of school buses or a similar fleet transportation system is preferred.
  • Experience with Bus Routing Software or willingness to learn.
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience as a CDL licensed school bus driver.
  • Three (3) years of experience in transportation operations.

Other Required Qualifications And Pertinent Information

  • Personal driving history must be accident- and violation-free for at least the previous three (3) years.
  • No record of DUI or felony while operating a motor vehicle at any time.
  • Incumbent is subject to after-hours call-out and duty outside of regularly scheduled work hours.

Knowledge Of

  • Pennsylvania CDL driving licensing requirements.
  • State and local traffic laws and regulations, including provisions of the motor vehicle code and the education code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting school students.
  • Safe driving practices and defensive driving practices.
  • Public school bus transportation operations and procedures.
  • State reporting & experience with Bus Routing Software.
  • Principles and techniques of conducting classroom and behind-the-wheel training.

Requisite Skills

  • Operating standard office equipment and Google Suite.
  • Operating heavy and light-duty vehicles.
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Operating a two-way radio and effective telephone techniques and etiquette.
  • Communicating effectively in English, both in writing and verbally, and carrying out written and verbal directions.
  • Being flexible when working with others in a wide variety of circumstances.
  • Problem solving by identifying issues and creating action plans.
  • Writing clear, complete, accurate, and logical safety reports and specifications.
  • Maintaining confidentiality.
  • Working independently and as part of a team.
